Since 2012, Malandrino has represented the project of making an important wine without wood, relying solely on aging in steel and cement. The fruit of this Malandrino is clear and crisp, starting with notes of sour cherry and then moving to ripe wild cherry. On the palate, it impresses with freshness and drinkability, along with an intriguing complexity. A wine for all meals, perfect for pairing with hearty Abruzzese dishes.

Vine
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grape 100% that extends in the Orsogna (CH) area at an altitude of about 300/450 meters above sea level. The planting type is partly guyot and partly Abruzzese pergola.
Winery
The grapes, after careful selection, are destemmed and crushed, the skins are left in contact with the must with their indigenous yeasts for 10/15 days at a constant temperature of 25/28°C. The aging takes place partly in oak barrels and partly in stainless steel tanks for at least four months. Followed by bottle aging.
Wine
On tasting, it presents an impenetrable ruby red color. Aroma of red fruit and sour cherry jam throughout, slight notes of cocoa and toasting complete the bouquet. Warm taste, appropriately tannic and therefore soft, intense, and with the typical almond finish. Ideal with platters of cured meats, grilled and oven-cooked meats, first courses with very structured sauces.

From an almost impenetrable ruby color, which reveals only a violet edge, an intense nose opens up with clear mineral notes of graphite and dark fruit, primarily blackberry, and slightly balsamic nuances on the background. The taste attack is always very soft and enveloping, thanks to the sweetness of the tannins. The typical acidic vein of these grapes, which gives a pleasant sense of freshness, provides the wine with a tasting dynamism that enhances its structure and depth. In the long finish, the aromas of ripe fruit from the bouquet return.

Vineyard
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 100% from the Tenuta del Cerano (340 m a.s.l.) Valle Peligna, Vittorito, with medium-textured soil tending to clay. The training system is a trellis with spurred cordon. Average yield per hectare of 90 quintals. Manual harvest carried out in the last week of October, early November.
Winery
Destemming and gentle pressing. Maceration of the grapes for 15-20 days with temperature control at 28°-30° C. At the end of alcoholic fermentation, the wine is refined in tonneaux (10-5 hl) where it matures for 12 / 18 months. Bottle aging for 6-8 months.
Wine
Wine with an intense ruby color with garnet hues. On the nose, intense aromas of forest fruits with vanilla notes. Soft, well-balanced, warm taste. A wine of great structure and aromatic persistence.
Excellent with strong-flavored dishes, game, red meats, aged cheeses.

For the production of this wine, only extremely healthy grapes are used in order to eliminate the use of sulfur. For this reason, the production of this wine is strongly subject to the climatic trends of the vintages and therefore is not produced every year.

Aging: maturation in steel
Variety: Montepulciano
Harvest: 2017
Soil: Clayey with medium texture
Training system: Guyot
Harvest: Manual collection of grapes with pre-selection in the vineyard
Average age of the vines: 15 years

It presents a broad and intense aroma, with predominant fruity notes, opening with cherries and blueberries, followed by spicy scents of tertiary origin (that is, derived from aging) with hints of cocoa, coffee, tobacco, and leather. The tasting of this red made from dried grapes is surprising; the astringency produced by the tannins and the freshness of the acidity integrate with the natural sweetness of the wine. Overall harmonious, velvety, soft, and with a long persistence.

Intense ruby red color with violet reflections. Pleasant and persistent aroma with fruity notes of red berry fruits, along with hints of sour cherry and blackberries. Full and round taste on the palate, with good body. The finish is of great persistence and pleasantness with sweet and velvety tannins. A full-bodied, soft, balanced, and intense wine.

Newly discovered grape variety

Maiolica Terre d'Abruzzo IGP 2024 Tollo Chieti

📜 A bit of history
The name “Maiolica” may derive from:
• malvasia → due to phonetic similarity and old ampelographic confusion
• maiolica (the ceramic) → because of the wine’s bright color
It was very widespread until the 19th century, then almost disappeared. Today it is being revived by small producers who want to enhance lesser-known grape varieties.
🌄 Why it is interesting for Navelli
Maiolica is a grape variety that speaks the same language as your territory:
• loves poor, limestone soils
• benefits from the strong temperature swings of the plateau
• produces authentic, identity-driven wines, not artificially crafted
It is a grape variety that could dialogue very well with your philosophy: tradition, understated elegance, deep roots.
