Water is an essential resource for life, abundant, but not inexhaustible (less than one
percent of the water present in nature can be used) and must therefore be protected. It is the
"principal" beverage, the healthiest, the best for the body's health, thanks to its mineral content,
it helps to replenish and provide the body with the salts that each of us needs.
Not all waters are the same: each has specific and different characteristics that depend on the
type of salts dissolved in it.
All drinking waters contain salts present in varying concentrations; the law considers
"mineral" only those that originate from an underground aquifer, have particular hygienic
characteristics (microbiologically pure) and favorable properties for health.
Drinking waters that reach the tap at home can be drawn from lakes, rivers, or surface
aquifers and may be subjected to treatments (for example, the addition of chlorine).
The quality of water
The current Italian law imposes on supplying companies the maintenance of precise quality parameters
for the water distributed in the network. In particular, Legislative Decree 2 February 2001, n. 31, subsequently
amended by Legislative Decree 2 February 2002, n. 27, in implementation of Directive 98/83/EC regulates the
quality of water intended for human consumption, in order to protect health from the negative effects
deriving from water contamination, thus ensuring its safety and cleanliness» (art. 1).
Gran Sasso Acqua S.p.A.
withdraws drinking water directly from 31 sources among natural springs and wells, located
within the optimal territorial area (ATO) managed, and distributes it to about 54,000 users
(115,000 inhabitants served) through a complex network of supply and distribution over
1,860 kilometers long. In a calendar year, an estimated water volume of over 9,500,000 m3
. The
laboratory for chemical and microbiological analysis performs constant checks on the quality of the waters
distributed, taking samples for analysis both directly from the sources and within the
distribution networks. The main chemical parameters are reported, detected for the sources of
water supply, for drinking use, most significant in the territory managed by Gran
Sasso Acqua spa.
